Black Google!

Yup, Google in Black! As not much has noticed, on Saturday, March 29 2008 is Google.com has ‘turned the lights out’ to acknowledge a worldwide energy conservation effort, Earth Hour. Here is a screenshot of Google in Black if you have missed it.

On Saturday, March 29, 2008, Earth Hour invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone. On this day, cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv, will hold events to acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation.

Why Google didn’t make this change permanent?
According to Google, it saves no energy by doing this – as far as the modern display is concerned. Modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display.

Any change I have to see Google in Black live? Do I need to wait for 29 March 2009 to get a live shot on this?

Well, not really…you can always go to

http://black-google.blogspot.com to see Google in Black live. Alternatively, you can check out Blackle.com – a Google based (Google Custom Search) search which also push energy saving effort.

P.S. Some folks in the UK, Canada and Australia also noticed this change in their local Google website.
